APPLETREE
GROUP CAMP - Appletree Group
Camp is available to groups of ten or more people by reservation
only. It is located 24 miles west of Franklin on the Andres
Road (S.R. 1401). There are four sites with restrooms and
one shower facility. It is located on the Nantahala River
and adjacent to several trails. Reservations may be made by
calling the Wayah Ranger District at 828-524-6441.
CHEOAH POINT
- This fee campground has
26 sites and is located on Santeetlah Lake. Boating, fishing,
and picnicking facilities are also provided. Nearby, the Wauchecha
Bald Trail provides a 7.3 mile hike to the Appalachian Trail.
It is 6 miles north of Robbinsville on U.S. 129.
FEREBEE MEMORIAL
RECREATIONAL AREA - Ferebee
Memorial is in Nantahala Gorge on U.S. 19, 4 miles north of
Topton. It has picnic tables with grills, toilets, and a launching
area for canoes, rafts, and kayaks.
NANTAHALA GORGE
- The Nantahala Gorge surrounds the Nantahala River. The Nantahala
River is a popular whitewater river for rafting, canoeing,
and kayaking. The river trip is 8.5 miles long. Whitewater
is conditional on water release by the power company. Individuals
can use their own boats. Many people use the services of commercial
outfitters located in the gorge. The Nantahala River Launch
Site for put-ins is located at the junction of U.S. 19 and
S.R. 1310 at Beechertown. Ferebee Memorial (number 11) is
a mid-point take-out and put-in. Wesser (downstream from Nantahala
Outdoor Center) is a take-out landing and viewing area.
SNOWBIRD PICNIC
AREA - This area is on Snowbird
Creek. It also offers the opportunity to trout fish. Take
U.S. 129 north of Robbinsville for 1.1 miles and turn left
on S.R. 1116. Go 3.5 miles and turn right on S.R. 1127. The
picnic area will be 1.3 miles. |
