WHITESIDE
MOUNTAIN - Whiteside Mountain
stands as a landmark along the eastern continental divide.
It rises more than 2100 feet from the valley floor to the
summit at 4930 feet. The south face contains magnificent granite
cliffs ranging from 400 to 750 feet high. A 2 mile loop trail
takes hikers along the ridge of the mountain to spectacular
views to the east, south and west. Rock climbing is permitted
from August to January. The other months are restricted to
provide habitat for the peregrine falcon, which has been reintroduced
to the area. Go 5 miles east of Highlands on U.S. 64. Turn
right on Whiteside Mtn. Road (S.R.1600). Go 1.5 miles and
the parking lot will be on the left.
YELLOW MOUNTAIN
FIRE TOWER - The recently
restored tower is located on the Macon-Jackson County line.
It offers panoramic views. It can be reached by foot on a
4.8 mile (one way) trail from Cole Gap on Buck Creek Road.
Take U.S. 64 east approximately 3 miles from Highlands and
turn left on Buck Creek Road (S.R. 1538). Go 2.3 miles and
look for a pull-off and a path going straight up the bank
on the right side of the road. |
